Guatemala
Purpose
I'm thankful to be part of a family that pushes me to love deeper and put others before myself. I am equally grateful to be part of a church that lives out their core values of servitude and missions. Before my junior year of high school, I had never left the country, but that summer, I was overcome with the desire to serve and spread Jesus' name to a new nation. I took the leap and went on a mission trip to Guatemala to aid the orphanage, Casa Shalom. I became so passionate about this place and these people I returned the next year. It was a defining moment for my personal life and travel life.
Takeaways
Do you remember your first time out of the country? Or can you imagine what your first experience may feel like? Feelings of fear, confusion, and joy overwhelm your senses. My time in Guatemala uncovered privilege and ungratefulness in my heart as well as excess in my life. However, it strengthened my appreciation for other cultures. I will always remember the time I was cooking lunch with a few Guatemalan women. I spoke minimal Spanish, so conversation was sparse, but suddenly, one of them began humming a song. Immediately, I recognized it-- How He Loves by John Mark McMillan-- and I began singing along. Soon enough, the whole kitchen was singing together, and feelings of pure joy overcame me. I found true beauty in cultivating relationships with people of different backgrounds, even with barriers. If you're willing to put in the effort, there is always common ground to be found.
